Global studies - Essay Example The situation in Central America including Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador has gotten worse in the past year as more than 45, 000 minors crossed over to the US. These minors were running away from poverty, drug gangs and violence in their home countries. The increase in number of immigrants has resulted to a humanitarian crisis and the president of the US has requested his Congress to set aside $3.7 billion that is aimed at helping these refugees. The UN should take responsibility for these refugees and provide them with housing, processing and other basic needs (Fanon 42). The US government can also chip in since it has shown interest to do so through the proposal that was made by the president. To start with, the UN through the UN Refugee agency that is abbreviate as UNHCR is responsible for providing medical care, food, water , shelter, security and protection to individuals that have been forced to flee from their home countries following violence, poverty and persecution. In instances where it is possible, the UNHCR helps refugees find their way back home with dignity and if they are willing. Where such action is impossible, the organization may resettle the individuals in a third country or undertake local integration (Baker and Tony 197). Since its formation in the 1950s, the UNHCR has been playing an imperative role in resettling refugees and giving them a fresh start in life as well. This explains the main reason why the UN should take full responsibility of the refugees. According to the UNHCRââ¬â¢s mandate, the body is in charge of taking care of refugees. The minors qualify as refugees since they flee their homes following poverty and violence. Governments are required to ensure basic human rights of their denizens and once they have attained the refugee status, this security ceases to exist (DECLARATION, OF.).
